“I was asked to consider world issues such sustainability and conservation as the inspiration for this project. My intention was to some how connect these issues with in the sculpture; The recycling/reusing of WWF literature is a reference to sustainability, and the fragility of the material itself (paper), to conservation.
The piece is constructed from communications material of the charity (their member magazines), reworked using a traditional origami technique. As with much of my work the material itself catalysed the project; my passion lies in process, technique and material exploration." - Rowan Mersh
Visually robust, yet fragile in its structure, Untitled stands for the content contained in the WWF publications and all that is yet unwritten. Rowan Mersh challenged himself with one of the most recognised and abundant communication materials of the charity: their triannual member magazines. As suspected, the pages were loaded with vital information and inspiring content and at first it was puzzling as to how Mersh would tackle the task at transforming the material. His virtuosity of impactful communication came when he decided to use the actual pages to create the artwork by adapting the complicated and age-old art of paper folding to create a spectacular undulating sculpture.
