Installation view of Stuart Haygarth & Sian Evans' Temple Tip Bower, 2012
Stuart Haygarth & Sian Evans
"The Temple Tip Bower is a forest dweller from an apocalyptic future who gathers remnants from a distant past creating a ‘Newtopian’ present. In a similar way to the Bower bird, this creature obsessively collects one specific object. In this case the creature gathers and utilises found Temple Tips from salvaged spectacles and has created a wearable garment providing warmth and protection." - Stuart Haygarth & Sian Evans
Stuart Haygarth and Sian Evans have combined their creative forces to imagine a ‘Neutopian' moment in time through their nomadic being the Temple Tip Bower, who is a neutral and adaptable beast. As a hybrid of bear and cosmonaut, the Temple Tip Bower has made the forest his home and seeks to endure against the fall of the ecosystem and adjust to the planet’s changing environment. This woodland creature assumes its name from the Bower Bird, who similarly assembles and sorts objects compulsively, however instead of doing so for the purpose of attracting a mate, it collects Temple Tips for shelter and survival. The Temple Tip Bower is a sobering two-fold reminder that healthy forests are the keystone to life and materials discarded by one person, can be life-saving to another.
