“My contribution for WWF Pandamonium is a wearable painting designed to evoke an experience of rain. It started with a single raindrop painted in oil on canvas. I then thought this flat raindrop needed a 3-D presence. So I painted another raindrop of the same size, cut it out and glued it to the back of the first. It was fun to see the depicted raindrop from both sides, and I went on to paint dozens. This back-and-front configuration opened the way for more 3-D play. I strung the raindrops together on fishing line and attached these lines to an open umbrella. I painted a raincoat, dress and rubber boots with watery paint to complete the rainy moment.” - Lisa Milroy
Just as a rain shower begins with a lone drop, so too did Lisa Milroy for her artwork Rain. Using her fluid process of exploring surface and paint, Milroy expands our understanding and appreciation of the environmental phenomenon of rainfall through her classic ‘comic-strip-illustration’ style. This celebration of rain further explores Milroy’s fasciation and determination to subvert the 2D properties of painting by using unexpected material forms to support the paint – essentially challenging common expectations and offering a new entrance point for audience engagement on the subject addressed. Milroy reminds us of the importance to actively participate in the pleasure of natural occurrences and to never take such moments for granted.
