“When WWF asked us to be a part of the show I felt like I needed to be a part of it given the importance of the organization and that the theme of the show was wearable sculpture which is a part of the body of work I’ve done in the past. We lent one of the frosted glass headpieces which were used in the Hussein Chalayan SS98 show “Between”. The idea behind the headpieces was the exploration and questioning the notion of identity which can easily be erased by the concealment of one’s face.” - Hussein Chalayan
Meditative, solemn and steady-paced, the emergence of Between had everyone holding their breath. Challenged by obliterated vision, the model’s stoic poise captivated the mystified audience who were left wondered how one without sight could negotiate the difficult terrain of the catwalk. Through Between, Hussein Chalayan invites us to investigate the distinctiveness of WWF and the organisation’s significance to the wider public. Chalayan intrigues us by presenting something we have seen before, that being his 1998 glass headpiece, but showcased within this new context the artwork takes on a new meaning. A charged parallel to how change of context can help reassess and update the well-known logo and much-loved organisation of the WWF for a new audience.
