“Hyperbolic swarf drawing is essentially a huge pencil sharpening shaving that is made from a rod of blue nylon. To form it my team and I developed a huge cutting tool to use on our lathe that cut a conical hole out of a large rod. Instead of the material removed by the process being a waste product it is the material from the hole we have bored that we were after.” - Conrad Shawcross
Conrad Shawcross reinterprets mathematical code into a tactile 3D wearable sculpture to evoke discussion on how natural processes have an inevitable effect even to the most calculated formulas. Displayed as a piece which undulates around the body, ‘Hyperbolic swarf drawing’ challenges our understanding of ‘waste’ and spins the concept on its head by preferring the leftover elements to the primary product. Another vibrant reminder of finding beauty, warmth and usefulness in that which is normally intended for the bin.
