"The idea behind our mask is the ‘chimera’, a mythical creature assembled from various different animals, in this case the beak of a predatory bird, the iconic eyes of a panda and the antlers of an antelope. This reflects the diversity of the animal kingdom and its vulnerability, exemplified in the broken animal figurines that make up the antlers, giving expression to the damage than mankind carelessly causes to its fellow creatures." - Stephen Jones & Bouke de Vries
Long-time friends Stephen Jones and Bouke de Vries came together for their first collaboration to create a powerful chimera mask that symbolises the precious interdependency of the animal kingdom reflected in the use of amalgamated ceramic animals and real gold. The piece strikes consciousness to how humans are disrupting this union exemplified through broken animals. The work’s secondary function, as a wall-hung trophy, emphasises man’s perceived significance over animals. A particular hope for Jones and de Vries is that “[Pandamonium] is going to make WWF relevant for a new young visually aware generation.” and so to them Chimera mask embodies stresses and strains leading us to a wake-up call that our everyday choices can drastically effect the treasurable wildlife with whom we share the world.
