AndAZ Hotel: 2007
Wilsden Design approached us to curate and commission four site specific sculptures for the newly refurbished entrance lobby of ANdAZ Hotel (previously the Great Eastern Hotel) designed by Conran.
Building upon the boutique hotel’s long-standing relationship with contemporary art we invited: David Nash, Matthew Chambers, Jack Milroy and Lolly Batty. Nash responded with a signature Crack and Warp Column - a horizontally cut structure demonstrating his on-going preoccupation with wood, ages and qualities. Chambers introduced three intricately crafted ceramic sculptures that play off the lobby’s architectural space, light and colour. Milroy and Batty were each challenged with existing large glass cabinets flanking the space outside the main elevator doors. Milroy’s sophisticated construction of archival inkjet figures meticulously cutout appear as a marvelous procession of flying mannequins; whereas, Batty’s collection of geometric sculptures play with the ever-changing light of the space. Together these commissions compliment the ethos of ANdAZ Hotel and add to the 5-star experience.
