Waldorf Astoria, Syon Park

In 2010, The Hilton Group decided to bring the New York bred Waldorf Astoria to London’s own Syon Park Hotel. The Ability Group were the project developers and they worked on the look, feel and design of the hotel with February London, who invited Artwise to explore the possibility of integrating art into the new build.

We commissioned three art collectives to create site-specific art installations for Syon Park: Studio Roso, Troika, and UVA. Each artist was challenged to bring nature indoors and to engage in a dialogue with the unique setting of the hotel’s parklands; each approach was different and intriguing, both in materials and interpretation. The resulting artworks integrated the beauty of nature in its most complex forms into the architecture of the building. They demonstrated the artists’ informed understanding of the qualities and conditions of the location space, and the inspiration that they drew from it. Together, the three works successfully ‘brought the outside in’.
