High Street 2012

High Street 2012 established a series of initiatives in East London to provide lasting improvements along the intersecting high streets connecting the City at Aldgate to the Olympic Park at Stratford. The programme responded to the area’s need of physical regeneration to update, restore and redesign the architecture along the route, and to accommodate the increasing number of people and work better for the local community, businesses and people visiting.

Artwise, together with Alan Baxter Associates and East Architects, were awarded the Whitechapel stretch and developed a strategy for the area, which included a bespoke integrated public art strategy. Through community consultation, key project objectives for the public art programme were identified.  Through understanding what the people of Whitechapel themselves wanted, Artwise were able to establish a plan that would organically integrate into the culture and architecture, while being championed by the local community.
